NRA Basic Range Safety Officer Course

  Skill Level: Beginner to Expert

An 8-hour (1-day), in-person course that introduces how to organize, conduct, and supervise safe shooting activities.

The NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) program was developed in response to the demand for a nationally recognized range safety officer certification. The course curriculum consists of classroom time and practical exercises conducted in a range environment. Earning this credential is the first step in an ongoing commitment to facility safety and community education.

What You Will Learn

You will be introduced to RSO's roles and responsibilities, range standard operating procedures, range inspection and range rules, firearm stoppages and malfunctions, and Range Safety Briefings which include procedures to follow in the case of an emergency.

You will also develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude to command a live-fire environment with confidence, clarity, and firm authority. This leadership training teaches you how to maintain situational awareness, run safety briefings, and manage shooter behaviors.

What You Need to Have and Know

  1. No less than 21 years of age at the time of registration.
  2. A physical valid California or Legal Resident photo ID card.
  3. A valid NRA Membership Account ID number.
  4. Ability to read, speak and comprehend English Language.
  5. Ability to check your email inbox regularly.
  6. Ability to arrive early and check-in on time.
  7. Ability to conduct firearm safe handling demonstrations.
Ear protection, eye protection, semi-automatic pistol, hollow point ammunition, and magazine with ammunition loaded.

When You Are Done

  Congratulations!

Upon successful completion of this course, an NRA-Chief Range Safety Officer will send you a digital Certificate of Completion from Sure Grip Arms by email.

As per the NRA: Basic Range Safety Officer lesson plan (and in your handbook), you will need to register for an NRA instructor account, login and then activiate your RSO credentials.

RSO's who have successfully completed the course then have the ability to become a Chief Range Safety Officer, someone essential to training and supervising NRA Range Safety Officers and developing range standard operating procedures.

Most importantly, you will leave with the confidence, guidance, and proficiency to safely conduct shooting events!
